Manhattan Chapter History
The Manhattan Chapter of NCBW is 15 years old. Started by a group of young women from NYU law school and a few others in 1992, the chapter was inaugurated with 40 women by then National President Barbara DeBaptiste. At the time the Manhattan Chapter joined two other established chapters in New York, the founding chapter of the national organization (NY Coalition of 100 Black Women), and the Long Island Chapter. At one time there was an active chapter in Albany, NY as well; however it dissolved in the 1980s.
The Manhattan Chapter was known in the 1990s as a younger chapter within the national organization as the average age of the women in the chapter was 30. In 2008, the Chapter is diverse in many ways including age. Our members are professionally represented by numerous sectors from finance to health, human and youth services. The Chapter welcomes Black women to join twice a year. All of us are committed to the empowerment of Black women and girls as our shared mission.
The Manhattan Chapter implements the agenda of the national organization at the local level focusing its efforts on activities that support three tenets: leadership development, advocacy on issues affecting Black women and girls, and economic development. We undertake our mission in several ways including strong programming with the potential to motivate, organize and challenge women and men to embrace the empowerment of Black women and girls in their work and service.
NCBW is a non-partisan, pro-choice organization that is committed to gender equity. We are feminists working together with the shared mission of empowerment of Black women and girls. The Manhattan Chapter is one of 63 chapters of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, a growing, focused and vibrant movement across this country. To be a member of the Manhattan Chapter means that you are committed to this national movement.
As members of this dynamic Chapter you should be proud of yourself for making that commitment.
